WAS and Shenandoah University are again seeking individuals with spinal cord injuries, amputations, degenerative diseases of the nervous system, MS, muscular dystrophy, CP, spina bifida, or other related disabilities to participate in their program that combines physical therapy and adaptive skiing (or snowboarding).
Almost anyone who walks with canes, crutches, or a walker, or who uses a wheelchair for mobility can participate in this unique program at Wintergreen Adaptive Sports.
An initial evaluation by a Shenandoah University Physical Therapist student, under the supervision of a licensed PT, takes place at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville, Virginia (Augusta County) in December.
After the evaluation, there are four sessions of approximately 1.5 hours of PT focused on your current level of fitness and impairments, followed by 1.5 hours of on-snow instruction with the WAS staff and an SU PT student. Each session is four weeks long on Thursdays.
The specific dates for the 2018-19 schedule will be announced soon
Session 1: January and February. Mornings or afternoons.
Session 2: February and (early) March. Mornings or afternoons.
Wintergreen Adaptive Sports provides all adaptive ski or ride equipment and a helmet (required for sit-down ski equipment). Contact Dr. Melissa Wolff-Burke, PT at Shenandoah University at 540-545-7238 or email mwolff@su.edu to schedule an initial evaluation or for more information.
